Species 2000
"Species 2000 has the objective of enumerating all known species of plants, animals, fungi and microbes on Earth as the baseline dataset for studies of global biodiversity. It will also provide a simple access point enabling users to link from here to other data systems for all groups of organisms, using direct species-links. Users worldwide will be able to verify the scientific name, status and classification of any known species via the Species Locator on this homepage. The Species Locator provides access to species checklist data drawn from an array of participating databases."

6 Billion Human Beings
The world is a crowded place. Six billion crowded, as a matter of fact. Every second, five people are born, and two folks die.  That's a net gain of three people for every click of the clock, according to the folks at the Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris, the sponsor of this fascinating site. Look up your age to find out how the world's population has changed since you were born, what percentage of the population is still older than you, or even how many people who were born the same year as you are still living. Take a trip through the Shockwave-heavy tour to discover countless facts about the delicate balance that we as humans maintain here on Earth.

The GLOBE Program
Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) is a worldwide network of students, teachers, and scientists working together to study and understand the global environment. Students and teachers from over 7,000 schools in more than 80 countries are working with research scientists to learn more about our planet. GLOBE students make environmental observations at or near their schools and report their data through the Internet. Scientists use GLOBE data in their research and provide feedback to the students to enrich their science education. Global images based on GLOBE student data are displayed on the World Wide Web, enabling students and other visitors to visualize the student environmental observations.

Human Genome Project
The Human Genome Project (HGP) is an international 13-year effort formally begun in October 1990 to discover all the estimated 100,000 human genes and make them accessible for further biological study. Another project goal is to determine the complete sequence of the 3 billion DNA subunits (bases in the human genome). As part of the HGP, parallel studies are being carried out on selected model organisms such as the bacterium E. coli to help develop the technology and interpret human gene function. The DOE Human Genome Program and the NIH National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) together make up the U.S. Human Genome Project.

Visible Human Project
From the National Library of Medicine, this project involves the creation of complete, anatomically detailed, three-dimensional representations of the normal male and female human bodies. Acquisition of transverse CT, MR and cryosection images of representative male and female cadavers has been completed. The male was sectioned at one millimeter intervals, the female at one-third of a millimeter intervals. The long-term goal of the project is to produce a system of knowledge structures that will transparently link visual knowledge forms to symbolic knowledge formats such as the names of body parts.
